For his second album, Montreal-based singer-songwriter Gaines teamed up with forgotten '80s pop wizard Aldo Nova. The result was a disc of mid-tempo power ballads flavoured by shuffling beats and uplifting lyrics. Everything, from pace and tone to instrumentation, seems geared toward inoffensiveness. Gaines croons earnestly and competently about lost love through songs like "Gone in Your Arms" and works up a bit of a groove on the impossibly titled "Panavision Technicolour Spaceship Tight Rope," yet for someone bold enough to put the word "soul" in his band's name, Gaines lacks substance and ballast. --Matt Galloway
