Details: Amazon.ca Sex and violins--what more do you need? Actually, though the back cover of the disc shows a violin propped up against Melanie Doane's naked back, Adam's Rib isn't anything to get overly hot and bothered about. Instead, the Nova Scotia-born singer-musician delivers sturdy, undemanding pop confections, many co-written with producer Rick Neigher. The artist's main hook is indeed the fact that she plays a mean fiddle--without her instrument, Doane might come across as just another Lilith Fair second-stager with a pleasant but unprepossessing voice and a handful of above-average tunes. As it stands, her well-timed violin adds hooky punctuation to tracks like "There Is No Beautiful" and the third-wave feminism of "Happy Homemaker." "Waiting for the Tide" and the title track offer radio-ready choruses, and Doane is capable of a trick or two, as when "I Can't Take My Eyes off You" turns out to be an ode to her television set and not a lover. A few weak moments, including the sappy MOR-ish pop "How You Cried" and the unremarkable "Good Gifts" barely detract from what is a satisfying if not terribly original pop record. Besides, anyone who'd name her version of a traditional instrumental after an SCTV skit, "Mel's Rock Pile," can't be all bad. --Shawn Conner Product description Sex and violins--what more do you need?
