Many thousands of years ago, these tiny siliceous particles called 'frustules' were living single-
celled plants called Diatoms. These tiny aquatic organisms lived in both salt water and
freshwater, nearly covering the entire planet. After these plants died, the silica-based cell wall is
left behind, still intact. These microscopic skeletal remains make up the billions of particles that
form the silky off-white powder we call Diatomaceous Earth.
When shopping for your favorite brand of Diatomaceous Earth, there are a number of fact
checks that should be done quickly before you consider purchasing. First of all, is it food grade?
This means that it is a product deemed safe to be used in food manufacturing, as a processing
aid. Secondly, you can look for whether it is from freshwater or saltwater sources. Freshwater
