Fight for Love, 54-40's benchmark 1989 release co-produced by Skinny Puppy's Dave "The Rave" Ogilvie and vocalist Neil Osborne, is a sleek combination of jangly pop and sturdy, modern folk, built largely on Phil Comparelli's distinctive guitar playing. Though Osborne's vocals have drawn comparisons to Michael Stipe (and some of the music is reminiscent of R.E.M.), Fight for Love incorporates pointed lyricism and less arty rock. From the friendly opener, "Here in My House" to the psychedelic closer, "Journey," there's melody, tension, and a strong beat.
