Details: Amazon.ca Deltron 3030 Instrumentals, Dan the Automator's collaboration with hip-hop lyricist supremo, (DTFH) and Ninja tune's quirky turntablist, was heralded as one of the uniquely superior hip-hop albums of 2000. Dan the Automator's career as a subversive concept hip-hop producer (, and ) has covered more distance than a hustler's Mercedes. With it's suspenseful futuristic soundtrack vibe, it's not surprising that the Instrumentals work so well. However without the real star, DTFH, the album is more a whispering fix of muted breakbeats and lost-world harmonies than an amazing 31st century space opera. This 12-track album reveals the genesis of Del's mind-blowing lyrical meltdown, "3030" as a glacial symphony that sounds as if it's been carved out of ice or an up-dated Star Wars score. "Time Keeps Slipping" (the song where sings in a falsetto) verges on folk-hop territory and "Positive Contact" shines as a stellar example of focused, melodic mashed-up instrumental hip-hop. The child-like lullaby of "Things You Can Do" probably works best but Bjork associate, Mark Bell's remix of "Turbulence" (with vocals from DTFH) pushes the track into a pricklier, more engaging orbit. Deltron 3030 Instrumentals isn't as boundary expanding as the original (it couldn't be) but as a testament to the visionary impact of the Automator, it's well worth a listen. -- Reuben Dessay
