In 2010 he put together a trio with two local stalwarts, bassist Daniel Lessard and drummer Pierre Tanguay. The band’s name, Les Malcommodes, which roughly translates as ‘the cantankerous ones’, is by no means a nuisance; in fact it’s both playful and witty, thanks to the leader’s Monkish leanings. It is this unit that underpins this new project of his. “I turned 50,” he states, “so I wanted to treat myself by casting players I like very much individually, but who have never really played together before.
