Séparé de son épouse Alex, elle aussi détective, il entretient une liaison avec une jeune et jolie femme mariée, Ann. Mais lorsque celle-ci et son mari sont assassinés, Matt doit mener l’enquête parallèlement à son ex, alors que toutes les pistes le désignent comme coupable idéal. \n Empruntant les mêmes chemins que The Fugitive ou Presumed Innocent, Out of Time nous fait partager la course contre la montre d’un homme que tout accuse. Jouant au chat et à la souris avec la police, le héros peut néanmoins compter sur l’aide d’un ami loyal, second rôle plutôt amusant, interprété par John Billingsley. Porté essentiellement par le charisme de Denzel Washington et par une réalisation assez léchée, malgré une accentuation fort peu subtile des effets de tension, le film surfe sur un scénario plutôt convenu et donne au spectateur ce qu’il est en droit d’attendre  ;: un peu de tension, d’action et d’adrénaline.
